Start of day 2

After a strong ride through the night including some steep and long ascents and a long technical descent in the dark Shu has needed more sleep than we had planned for.

We are taking advantage of the longer than planned break to make sure the follow vehicle is full of fuel and hopefully saving ourselves a break later in the day.

The crew have also been finding it tough as we have moved out of the first 24 hours of the race without getting a great deal of sleep. We are working to get into better routines allowing two crew members at a time a more sustained period away from supporting Shu to try to get a decent couple of hours sleep.

We’ve also been developing our abilities to snatch sleep wherever we can including a first for a couple of crew members – curled up on the sidewalk.

In terms of strategy for the ride, it’s a tightrope between time on the bike and the sleep deprivation. We also work hard to minimise time off the bike during stops. Each section of the ride is treated differently, so we pushed hard to get through as much as possible of the desert in the dark and to get out of it as soon as possible. We are also hoping for some fast sections in Kansas.

She’s holding her ground with the men, over taking a couple on the hills and she’s in good spirits.

Shu says she’s feeling daunted about how much there is to do and not being able to predict what is going to happen.
